“License fees” are also known as taxes. The City gets money from sports events from two main sources: license fees and sales tax.

I thought that the city also got money from income, or earnings, taxes from the players, umps etc. They are working in the city, so they had to pay the tax. I am open to being wrong.

You are wrong. There is an exemption for the 1% earnings tax for the players, coaches and umps.
