Smith, Gambaro Exchange Blows

Posted on 03 August 2006 by Antonio D. French

The battle for the southside vote is heating up as attacks between the two white State Senate candidates, Jeff Smith and Derio Gambaro, go back and forth in the mailboxes of 5th District voters south of Delmar.

Gambaro attacked Smith on his involvement with the Confluence Academy Charter Schools:

Smith attacked Gambaro on his support of Social Security reform:

Gambaro attacked Smith again on his charter schools:

Then Smith called Gambaro a “Republican in Democrat’s clothing”:

Then Gambaro said Smith would say anything to get elected:

You know, if white people just stopped fighting one another, they might be able to get something done for their communities.

That’s sarcasm, people.

That’s funny, Antonio. I don’ t know how many times I’ve heard that said about black people. Thanks for pointing out that white folks do the same thing all the time.

Antonio, did you receive all the flyers from both of them in the mail at your place, or did someone else provide some? I’m curious about who’s mailing district-wide or just south.

whom does this gambaro moron think he’s fooling? all any voter needs to do is go see both candidates in person, and he has absolutely no chance! he’s just full of empty generalizations - no substance whatsoever.

To me, the obvious question in response to Derio Gambaro attacking Jeff Smith over his involvement with the Confluence Academy is, “OK, Derio, so what have *you* done to improve public education in the city?” As far as I know, the answer is “nothing.”

    Anonymous 2,

There are a lot of Catholics in town that will vote for someone that shares their views on stem cells, abortion, vouchers, etc. Gambaro will get more votes than you think. Actually, I think Smith’s attack on Gambaro regarding stem cells is unfortunate. For Gambaro, it is a moral issue. I disagree with Gambaro on it, but respect that people that want to define ‘personhood’ at conception are just trying to be protective.

Gambaro’s attacks on confluence are unfortunate. The longer school day, longer school year, required parental involvement, etc. are good things about Confluence. The problem is our country’s unwillingness to really take education seriously and pay for decent buildings, small class sizes, etc. I teach at a private school. Public school teachers have more personal strength than I have to accomplish what they do with the large classes.

Derio “the Bull” Gambaro is locking horns with Jeff “Lionheart” Smith, this is the throwdown before the showdown.

The fight is on and popping in South St. Louis, and Jeff Smith’s heart and toughness is getting tested right now!

Derio “the Bull” Gambaro has made it clear that he is not playing games with Jeff Smith and is willing to see what Jeff Smith is made of!!!!

How will Jeff Smith pass this test?

This is not Congressman Russ Carnahan in a 10-way race, this is Derio “the Bull” Gambaro coming at you full steam ahead in a rodeo!

The real question is can Jeff Smith ride “the Bull.”

When did Don King start posting on this blog?

  9. Antonio D. French Says:

No, Oracle, I didn’t receive these pieces in north St. Louis. I got them from some of my southside connections.

If Catholics want to define “personhood” at the earliest moment possible, it’s odd that they’d rather have frozen eggs from fertility clinics continually thrown out in the trash, instead of finding new medical cures for the post-utero living among us. Heck, even those still in the womb could benefit from new cures, but that’s after an egg actually implants into a uterus, unlike their counterparts outside a mother, sitting in a clinic or lab. But the strangest thing is how these single-issue Catholics will actually fight an amendment that specifically bans cloning.

I think you got the order of the mailings wrong. At least at my Hill-area home, I received them pretty much in the reverse order.

  12. Anonymous Says:

I got the Gambaro and Smith negative pieces on same day. The order of recieving them could have more to do with postal delivery than date of going to the post office.

  13. Anonymous Says:

I live in the tenth ward south of arsenal and I have recived nothing from Gambaro.

I have voted in just about every primary and general (city state Federal)since ‘03.

I mention that because I am curious as to who Gambaro is targating.

My sense is that Derio is targetting a very small base of people who he thinks might be susceptible to this nonsense. The guy is a manipulative loser. He cherry picks statistics to try and make someone who is actually working towards solutions for our cities. I have been incredibly impressed with Smith. I have seen him all across this district trying to bring us together not tear us apart. This is what we need. I think the tone Derio has set is very unfortunate. I think he is in bed with El Amin on the issue of school vouchers and they are working together to attack smith.

Antonio, I appreciate your humor, for too often whites like to lump together the “black community.” But the very problem in City politics is this mentality of separate communities, as it reinforces an us-vs-them mentality.

Personally, I think Jeff is the one running to best represent the whole community of the 4th District as “ONE St. Louis.”

    That’s not sarcasm,that’s A-Rate satire.

I think the order was the crossword, the schools, another attack piece by Gambaro I haven’t seen, Wanted, Second Attack on Charter, Pool. The mail has been funky on all of them. We may be seeing mail for a week after the primary ;)

Derio’s universe is really funky. I think the negative stuff is going outside of 10 and 16 mostly. He might see those as areas of strength and so he doesn’t want to attack and turn off voters there. Just guessing.

The funniest is Derio criticizing Jeff for the FEC hassle from last cycle–Derio pled guilty to a Missouri violation.

In terms of embryonic stem cells, it has 80% support amongst Dems in the City, I’d hardly say it’s not a legit issue. Derio’s free to oppose it, but the voters should also evaluate that position.

  17. michaelkime Says:

I just want to thank Derio for promoting our movie in his mail piece. I hope he stirs up lots of controversy over that so more people go see it.

  18. Bubba Says:

Bubba says: A French, ha ha very funny dude! Don’t give up your day job dog! Oracle, Michael Kime, and Brian Marston–AMEN! Preach on brothers. Oracle, your Don King take made me spit up coffee all over my keyboard! Anonymous’–can your takes be much worser? Ask the Bull is he wants to ride Bubba–i dare him, i dare him, bring it on as Derio’s mentor Dubya says.

  19. Anonymous Says:

Dude, you gotta stop spitting stuff on your keyboard. Do you know what low voltage does to you?
I got every last stinkin’ mailer YESTERDAY. All of them. The order that I looked at them does not seem that important. Although they all seem to be much like I expect at every election, as a cynic, I was not swayed.
