The “below basic” numbers at all grade levels and in both categories are just scary. To think that 21-36% and 19-60% of students are below level in communications and math, respectively, is just incomprehensible. How did we get here? Where do we go from here?

Travis, one place to go that seems to be omitted most of the time is to the parents and homes of these students.

Why do students in other schools do better? Is it always the teachers or administrators? I think it is the home.

What’s the old saying, “Home is where the heart is?” If that is where the heart is, that is where the will and determination to learn and succeed in education begins.

In years gone by, the success experienced by white, black, and immigrant children was due to their home support. The onus for “No child left behind” should be placed squarely on the parents.

As the poll on my blog is currently showing, your opinion is well shared that the future success of the district does rest, at least partially, in greater accountability of parents.
