In one of his last acts as an alderman, License Collector-elect Mike McMillan announced Wednesday over $600,000 in grants for local organizations and businesses.
“The wide variety of projects funded by these grants will benefit many programs and many people, improving nearly every aspect of our community,” said the 19th Ward alderman.
“We’ve seen clear evidence of how these types of funds have helped create new opportunities for success in St. Louis. Through a lot of hard work by many people, we are making significant progress in revitalizing St. Louis and these grants will help to further advance that effort.”
Not all of the organizations which received fund were from the 19th Ward. McMillan said that through an agreement between members of the Legislative Black Caucus, grant money is sometimes pooled together to support organizations which service populations that cross ward boundaries.
Programs receiving grants from the City of St. Louis include: Human Development Corporation, Black World History Wax Museum, Better Family Life, Monsanto YMCA, Hopewell Mental Health Center, Food Outreach, JVL Childcare Center, Kim’s Kids, Tuxedo Room Restaurant, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Human Development Corporation, Vashon/Jeff-Vander-Lou Initiative, Community Health-in-Partnership Services (C.H.I.P.S), Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Eastern Missouri, Harambee, Red Door Restaurant, Portfolio Art and Education Gallery, 100 Black Men of St. Louis, Reach St. Louis, Francois’ Restaurant, and Ted Foster & Son’s Funeral Home.

Alderman/License Collector Elect Michael P. McMillan is one hell of a public servant to the people, and will be undoubtedly missed by the St. Louis community in his capacity as Alderman of the 19th Ward.
How many public servants in the history of St. Louis have vacated a elected seat and gave out $600,000 in grants to organizations not only in their ward but those organizations outside of their ward? A great example of to practice regionalism for the betterment of the entire community.
This is a bright guy that understands how to leave a legacy in the community and high standards for those that follow to fill. Marlene Davis will have some big shoes to fill, and I truly wish her the best because this is a tough act to follow. I think Alderman/License Collector Elect Mike McMillan should also consider becoming the committeeman of the 19th Ward.
This would allow him to help (no disrespect to Marlene Davis) assist in the transition from his vacancy to Marlene Davis’ occupancy of the 19th Ward Aldermanic seat.
Congratulations License Collector Mike McMillan, I am proud of you as my brother/friend, and maybe your new slogan should be “Mike McMillan-exceeding your expectations all the time!”
Peace & Love,

Isn’t McMillan taking credit for doling out public funds?
December 7th, 2006 at 9:51 am
What? A politician taking credit for handing out our money? Shocking!
Anony, I think that’s the name of the game.

Wow. I am impressed. McMillan is the man…

I would like to say that I am inpressed but unfortunately, I’m not. It may be true that some of the funds that were doled out may be for gret purposes, but over the years I have come to realize that much of the money that the aldermen have given out in grants was wasted. In addition to handing out the grant’s, he should publish a list of what the money is supposed to be used for and the measures to be taken to make sure the money is actually used for those purposes.
For instance, I would love to see the programs that are being funded through the Red Door Restaurant, Francois’ Restaurant and Ted Foster & Sons Funeral Home.

Ted Foster is a multi-millionaire,what does he need a grant for?

Quit hatin’ and just applaud the man for what he has done and for he is going to do. Perhaps the Red Door donates money to their annual toy drive, same with the funeral home. I am sure one way or the other, that money will make it back to the community. People always try to find holes in good news. Lets support Mike and be proud that he is giving back. I wish more pols, (given that they have the same resources) would follow his lead.

Why is Monsanto’s YMCA getting money? Sororities? Restaurant?
Are these categorical grants?

Amazing, so many people in that photograph that are McMillan campaign donors. Just payback, I’d guess, so they’ll have it to donate back to him again.

Looks like Mike is trying to buy his way into the Mayor’s office. McMillen against Slay in 2009!
