The Arch City Chronicle and Post reporter Jo Mannies report that State Sen. Jeff Smith will be supporting Gov. Matt Blunt’s expected appointment of Republican Carol Wilson as the next head of the St. Louis City Board of Elections.
Wilson will replace current chair, Kim Mathis.

Jeff gets to look bi-partisan. But I guess the teachers are still full from Donayle’s demise such that no one is mentioning Carol’s “white citizens council” past.

Lots of people mention Carol’s appearance 16 years ago on a school board slate that also included one or more members of an organization that had formerly been called the White Citizens Council. Wilson herself never belonged to that organization and therefore has no “white citizens council past.” The Post account says that Smith discussed that matter with Wilson and apparently came away satisfied that she does not hold unsavory views that would disqualify her from the position for which she was nominated.
What hasn’t been mentioned is that Wilson would become the third consecutive E Board chair from the same neighborhood in the 16th Ward (and also the third consecutive really good person for the job).

^You can really only find City Republicans in the same neighborhood of the 16th ward.

What is it Senator Smith? Is there some kind of cesspool of erroneous candidates they are giving you a choice to select from?
Wilson is not an ideal choice either. Why not ask Bill Haas. He has a wealth of experience and knowledge as it relates to education.
I’m sure he would love the opportunity to serve.

Carol did run on that slate, but she was never a member. I think there was some confusion about whether she repudiated Bugel and Holt–her points had been that she was proud of her advocacy and what got lost in that way of saying it was that she abhorred Holt and Bugel’s racism that she didn’t fully understand at the time.
I was pretty critical of her in her run for Alderman because the press hadn’t fleshed this out, but I think that’s all taken care of. Carol is a very nice person and while I’m sure there will be policy disagreements, she is competent and smart and will do a good job.
