Reed Gets Some Last-Minute Aid

Posted on 05 March 2007 by Antonio D. French

According to campaign finance reports filed over the weekend, Aldermanic President candidate Lewis Reed raked in almost $50,000 on one day last week, with most coming from two donors.

On February 28, George Kruntchev contributed $10,000 to the Committee to Elect Reed and Paul Weissman of New York City gave $35,000.

Reed is trying to become the first African-American ever elected President of the Board of Aldermen and the first black to unseat a white incumbent in a citywide election in 25 years.

Sounds like Reed is giving into big money interests again. What are these people going to expect Reed to do?

Aldermanic President for sale. Get your bids in now.

This is great news! Idealism aside, you need money to win. I was worried that Lewis was running out of steam. As Lacy Clay said, take that Wal-Mart money and still vote against them! This is about making history. Go Lewis!!!!

What does it say when the last minute infusion of cash (and a very large chunk) comes from out-of town?

    BE VERY WARY!!!!!

    Both men are developers.

Let’s see, $35,000 from NYC! Hmmmm! Isn’t that the town where the vandals who destroyed the city school system came from? Are these dollars kickbacks to the mayor’s interests that have pretty much been suspicious to say the least? And isn’t Vince Schoemehl touting a New York firm that damaged St. Louis and the educational interests of thousands of poor children?

Reed is for sale, it appears.

  6. BNB Says:

Stand in line, take the money! What does this mean? As most said this man is for sale. The problem is the election is tommorow. What is he going to use the $$$$ for? I guess some late TV but what else? Who knows!

  7. Anonymous Says:

walkaround money. come one, come all, Reed’s got cash to pay you - keep your hands out.

No. These are dollars for development deals requiring E & A approval. Old hat in this town, really.

Lweis is not looking good during his last week.

My guess is Lewis has tapped out funders in the city so he probably got some help from these two other contributers. Enough $$ to blitz TV and print (though thats a waste) and get some folks working the polls and the neighborhoods

Oh yeah dont forget the goal is to win, anonymus’

Bring on those NY Developers Lewis!

No, The money is so Reed isn’t left holding 90,000 in Debt to himself.

  13. Anonymous Says:

Yeah, congrats to the campaign. This will knock some of the debt off, but won’t really make a difference.

Anyone in their right mind knows Lewis is gonna get killed tomorrow. I’ll put the over/under at a 13 point loss. Any takers? Let me know.

In the meantime, I’m going to be preparing my resume- looks like a Mr. George Kruntchev and Mr. Paul Weissman will be hunting for a new donor advisor after they realize they just flushed $35K down the toilet.

  14. STAR JONES Says:

I can’t wait until tomorrow (election day) to see Shrewsbury crying like a baby as he makes his concession speech to Lewis Reed!

  15. Anonymous Says:

Placing bets: Shrewsbury 59% and Reed 41%. Low voter turnout as always in North St. Louis.

I know this sounds extremely naive but I have noticed that yard signs are virtually non-existent in the N. St. Louis neighborhood I work in.

Those of you who know…is this a reliable indicator of low neighborhood turnout? I find it a depressing reminder of voter apathy…or something.

  17. Doug Duckworth Says:

I have seen Lewis Reed signs all over the City, including vacant buildings, fences, the notable example being the Brecht which is under demolition and owned by Paul McKee who also donated to Lewis. This may not be illegal?

Paul McKee gave significant amounts of money to Shrewsbury as well. Turnout will be a factor for Reed and also Craig Schmid.
