NY Times on STLFD Racial Divide

Posted on 05 January 2008 by Antonio D. French

In today’s New York Times (hat tip to the Arch City Chronicle for first noting it), former Riverfront Times reporter Malcolm Gay pens an article on the City of St. Louis’ ongoing racial problems following Mayor Francis Slay’s handling of the promotions controversy in the fire department.

In demoting Mr. George, some of those leaders said, Mr. Slay brought St. Louis race relations to a new low. Some started a petition drive in support of a mayoral recall.

“Sherman George was an African-American in one of the highest positions in the mayor’s administration — he was an icon,” said Alderman Terry Kennedy, chairman of the Aldermanic Black Caucus. “To push him out like that? You’re not doing anything but causing trouble.”

To whomever is running Obama’s campaign locally:

Please ask Obama to promise to offer Mayor Slay a job in Washington. Right now I feel like it is best to vote for Hillary because she will probably offer Slay a job in Washington as a reward for the early endorsement. All politics is local. I’d rather have Darlene Green, Mike Millan, or one of the other choices for Mayor.

Having Slay go to Washington solves our current Mayoral problem.

I see that damn Slay is getting nationwide attention for what alot of people deem as his anti-black policies!Slay makes George Bush look like a genius!

Let me go on the record as saying whether Slay goes to Washington, Obama wins the presidential election, or King or any other influential figure is raised from the dead, there will always be racism in this country and in this city. Due to the fact of our leadership past, present, and future and the lack of the realization of the fact that it is here and needs to be erradicated.
