McCaskill for VP?

Posted on 29 January 2008 by Antonio D. French

JEFFERSON CITY — We heard an interesting rumor today in Jefferson City — at a John Edwards rally of all places (check back later for video). If Senator Barack Obama wins the Democratic nomination for President, would he select Sen. Claire McCaskill as his runningmate?Selecting McCaskill would do two important things: repair relations with some female Democrats now supporting Hillary Clinton, and almost certainly ensure the Democrats win the State of Missouri, which has a nearly perfect record for selecting the President.Hmmmmmm…

I like her. But she would add to the issue of inexperience.

Bill Bradley has a pretty deep background.

  2. Doug Duckworth Says:

I would rather select someone like Senator Feinstein but that’s me.

  3. Young Atticus Says:

If nto Edwards, I think it’s almost certain to be a woman. then if we look to women, Kjoe is right, MCCaskill would not bring much experience to the ticket. Watch for Gov. Sebelius of Kansas, a Democratic governor of a red state, who acquitted herself quite nicely in yesterday’s democratic response to the State of the Union. She was picked for a reason. Watch for it.

  4. St. Louis Oracle Says:

Although she doesn’t look it, Feinstein is 74, three years older than John McCain.

A white or hispanic woman would be a good running mate choice for Obama, but I’m not sure Claire fits the bill.

  5. Po Righteous Teacher Says:

Ask Walter Mondale what happended when he picked Geraldine Ferraro

  6. Papillon Says:

I don’t know what skill set she brings to the table. She may be, in time, a top notch legislator, getting consensus or arm twisting, whichever is necessary.

I don’t see those abilities today and think Sen. Obama’s administration would be better served with someone else as Vice President.

Also, if she resigns her seat there is a reasonable chance that a Republican governor gets to pick her replacement. A Democrat may well win the governor’s mansion, but it could turn out the other way as well.

Dems need all the senators they can get!!!

  8. Bushido Hacks Says:

At least it is not Hillary.

  9. Matthew Frederick Says:

    Bold prediction:

It’ll be Richardson, whoever gets the nomination.

  10. Anonymous Says:

Who Edwards would pick is a moot point, but adding McCaskill to anyone’s ticket isn’t going to soothe Hillary supporters. It just looks like she dumped on Hillary for her own gain.

That would be a great move on Barack’s part.

    Obama/McCaskill ‘08

Many, many people feel betrayed by McCaskill going back on her campaign promises, like voting for continued funding and more troops in Iraq. She is as politically expedient as Hillary. She’ll say anything to get elected. Now she looks more like a Republican, and has shown very poor judgment in her public persona. She is uninspired and a complete mismatch for Obama. He could do far better in picking a running mate.

  13. SNIDERMAN Says:

Called that one on Jan 12th

wouldn’t shock me a bit. But I’d want Hillary if that happened. All the way.

I think Barbara Boxer would be a good VP choice. She is a California Senator and has a great reputation with women. She is a strong, smart, independent woman.

I would love to see an Obama/Sebelius or Obama/Boxer ticket. It would be unstoppable.
