On the Ropes, Clinton Goes Negative (Again)

In an ad running on Wisconsin television, Senator Hillary Clinton attacks her rival Democratic presidential candidate, Senator Barack Obama, for agreeing to only two more debates between Super Tuesday (Feb 5) and the important March 4th contests.

The Obama campaign points out that the Democrats have participated in more debates — 18 at last count — than in any other campaign in recent memory. They also point out that Clinton, who was recently forced to loan her campaign $5 million from her personal savings, needs the free TV time a lot more than Barack Obama, who has now won seven eight contests in a row and is expected to win the next three.

Favorites tend not to want to share media attention with their challengers. Obama is now playing the role of the favorite.

I’m not really a Hillary fan, but how is this a negative ad? It focuses on the benefits of her healthcare and economic plans, while CONTRASTING her decision to debate further with Obama’s decision not to. Plus her disclaimer is at the end - not exactly the traditional technique of negative advertising. I’m not saying the Clintons don’t campaign with sharpened knives, but this isn’t really the best example of it.

Hillary has NO plans on being in Wisconsin at all for a debate. So how can you chalenge someone to a debate that you have no plans on going to? It’s like being stood up on a date.

Working for the middle class? Does she think that we forgot HER involvment in the Whitewater Controversy?

I believe that Whitewater will bring her down. That will be her Achillies heel when she finally gets to debate Barack Obama.

Hillary has not gone negative. This advertisement is a challenge to Obama. It seems fair the any candidate seeking to become the next president should avail themselves to a debate in each state. Obama brings very limited experience while Hillary brings excess baggage. I tend to believe most people would agree that both of them are better alternatives to our present situation. Maybe Hillary should tear up a little to win over the undecided voters.
