With the deadline for candidate filing just 25 hours away, longtime St. Louis Sheriff Jim Murphy might have thought he may skate to re-election without an opponent. No such luck.
Murphy will face at least one opponent — and a familiar one, too. Ken Griffey, who was one of three men to run against the sheriff four years ago, has again tossed his brown sheriff’s hat into the ring.
In 2004, Murphy was re-elected with 60% of the vote against three African-American opponents, including Griffey who came in second place with just 17.6%.
