Connie Johnson Kicks Off Senate Campaign

Posted on 06 April 2008 by Antonio D. French

St. Louis State Rep. Connie Johnson kicked off her campaign for senator of the 5th District with an event Friday at a gallery which was actually located in the 4th Senate District.

About 35 friends and supporters — mostly female — joined Johnson at the Diversity Gallery, 6150-6152 Delmar Blvd, to help her start her campaign. Among those in attendance were Keena Carter, daughter of former State Senator Paula Carter, who passed away in 2001; state rep candidate Mike Roberts, Jr.; and political consultant Harold Brown.

PubDef’s Danielle Belton interviewed Johnson at the event. She asked her why she chose to run for state senate and what she thought about some people calling her a “spoiler” or a “stalking horse”.

Johnson is one of three candidates seeking to replace the term-limited Sen. Maida Coleman. The other two are Rodney Hubbard* (watch his campaign kick-off video here) and Robin Wright-Jones (watch her campaign kick-off video here).

*Hubbard is a client of PubDef.net publisher Antonio D. French.

  1. What a Joke! Says:

35 people? You did say she was running for state senate, right? Sit down, Connie Johnson. Go back to your house in the 4th District and wait to run against Jeff Smith in 2011.

  2. Surreal in Soulard Says:

I never heard of this lady, but she sounds like she’s got a head on her shoulders, at least. But what was that south county remark? I’m here to tell you that there is poverty in south county too. Black people don’t have a monopoly on poverty. There are more poor whites in our region (including south county) than there are poor blacks. Remember that Ms. Johnson when you’re voting in the senate.

  3. NO CONNIE Says:

Connie I don’t feel you can win and you waited too long to file. No one knows you hardly in the wards especially the all white democratic clubs ask Harold brown a friend of mine the demographics. You would have had a fighting chance had you held open kickoff to the many voters of this district and a=south county is not a concern for south city voters not the same tax base for our community. Do you really know us and what we need?

  4. A Constituent Says:

Connie Johnson is a great public servant. She has always been responsive to me and my family. I’ve known her for years and she is going to be an outstanding senator for north AND SOUTH St. Louis. We need someone like Connie to bring our city together. She is not aligned with any political cliche. She is independent and she will win this election because she is the best candidate. Period. Dot.

  5. Danielle Belton Says:

LOL! Period. Dot. I couldn’t laugh when I was filming it, but that comment by Connie at the end was the first time I’d ever heard that. It was awesome. I’m totally going to start saying it all the time now. Period. Dot.

  6. stlvoice Says:

The woman that introduced Johnson asked for $5 donations…$5. I hope they don’t break the bank with all of those $5 bills.

  7. stlvoice Says:

Somewhere in a distance farm field there is a bull wondering what happended to his red table cloth. I think Rep. Johnson found it.

  8. Star Jones Says:

stlvoice, your diss of Rep. Johnson is infantile and unwarranted! She is an intelligent, attractive and more than competent elected official!

  9. nicole Says:

I feel you should drop out now to save shame later. You said you were not runing. What change your mind? did some one offer you a deal if you run. What ever it is they lie!!! you dont stand to win in north St,louis. Our trust lies with R hubbard

  10. Stalking Horse Says:

Connie’s “Dream” is to split the vote so she can get some of that Hubbard Money which Sinquefield has been stuffin in his pockets! She made a deal. We all know it. Drop out Connie, your killin our kids dream. Face it, Robin is the best candidate and she can’t beat the Hubbard money machine with you splitting the vote.

  11. BigD Says:

Reported on KMOX Connie has/had a hearing on her residency issue. With a report to be sent SOS office. I guess she does live in the 4th.

  12. BigD Says:

P.S. hearing was with STL Election Board.

  13. stlvoice Says:

James Hill was spotted at Connies event. He is the president of that Black Republican’s group. Does this mean that Johnson has the support of the Republican Party?

  14. stlvoice Says:

Star Jones was right. My comments about Johnson’s dress were inappropriate and unwarranted. But somewhere, somebody is missing a red table cloth.

  16. Nick Kasoff Says:

Danielle Belton - The “Period Dot” thing was copied from a talk host who is no longer on the air, at least here in St. Louis. She said it numerous times every hour of her program. And you might want to look a little closer at who said it before you take it as your own.

  17. Danielle Belton Says:

Nick - I only recently moved back to STL. (And I only listen to music on the radio) Who used “Period Dot?”
