   David jackson of the elected school board is a very impressive character to me. So is Kathryn Wessling. Either would challeng Slay’s semi-automatic white vote.

   From the sounds of it kjoe might be on to something. Do they fit the qualifications? If so let us support them because David Jackson has always been one of Slay’s favorite people. Word on the street is Slay is moving on to better things and has been in talks with him about being his successor. Keep your eye on Mr. Jackson

   Any word on how the recall vote gathering is going?

   Isn’t a little premature to be looking ahead to the primary when Slay very well may have to face a recall?

   I think Derio Gambaro would be the best choice since the Democratic Party really slighted him in favor of Jeff Smith. He would be the best candidate.

   that surprises me. are you possibly talking about former board member Ron Jackson who backed Slay’s drive to disenfranchise the voters?

   Who exactly is McMillan? I’m sorry if I cannot call it off of the top of my head, but what positions does he hold on the SLPS, charter schools, vouchers, etc? Does anyone know?

   Also, Doug, while I agree with you immensely on Bill Haas, sadly, I think a lot of people simply dismiss him as a cook nowadays. From the list on the poll, I’d go with either Green or Favazza (oh wow, I was the first to vote for him), never Reed or Shrewsbury, maybe Kennedy or McMillan. The last two I do not have enough info on to make a fair decision.

    Deiro Gambaro is a Republican, but then again so is Slay. That’s fine for the Hill, but not for the entire City.

    McMillan or Kennedy would do a much better job than the G Man.

    It is untrue that Derio is a Republican, he is a registered Democrat and had represented out State as a Representative. He has lived in the city except fpr a few years after college. What difference does it make if he lives on the Hill, he is a Democrat. Do you think people in Dogtown are all Irish? Your are stereotyping.

    MIKE MCMILLIN IS THE MAN, he can get the job done without drama and he generally cares about the citizens of St. Louis. You don’t hear his position on the schools because he is intelligent enough to know that any one who talks about the unholy alliance that has disenfranchised the residents of St. Louis city will only be tipping their hand before making any real changes. Just in case they “kill” him for cleaning up the injustices in the city, his FOINE a** is always “casket sharp”.

    Susan,

    His platform represented that of a Republican. He took money from Rex Sinquefield. The reason he ran as a Democrat is because the GOP has no machine. If they did we would see a good number of conservative Dems showing their real affiliation.

    Why would Smith support the nomination of a closet Republican?

    I still think they are guilty of jacksonism. they are getting David Jackson and Ron Jackson mixed up. Not all Jacksons are alike. Alan Jackson sings country music, Reggie jackson….uhh…does not do that real often.

    Run, Bill, Run! Doug is right about Gambaro but he is impressive when you hear/meet him. Seems like a good guy in the wrong party. Just an impression, but I think Darlene Green is likeable and has common sense.

    For the record, Derio is a centrist Democrat, that may annoy Democratic politicians who are leftist. Also, he is not Republican by what standards leftist measure party loyality. You still need to get the facts straight. Also, anyone can donate within the law’s limitto a campaign, that does not equal extraordinary special priveleges. If that were true, a lot of Democratic candiates would also be in big trouble.

    What is Liebermann nowadays? He was Gore’s vp candidate—now he could almost run with McCain.

    It is not against the law for a politician to switch parties—Reagan was once a democrat.

    It does get irritating when they want to have the convenience of one party’s label, while voting more often with the other party. Gambaro seemed to have made a positive impression on Blunt—perhaps he is also a favorite of Jay Nixon.

    School vouchers aren’t a centrist policy. It’s one from the right, as is the rest of the privatization Milton Friedman quackery. Democrats who support these policies are either drinking the cool-aid, or they’re closet Republicans.

    I am an SLPS teacher and I am against vouchers because they screw those who need the most help…

    BUT…

    I listened/questioned Gambaro when he outlined a school voucher policy that was very “centrist” and made some sense to me. Basically, he wanted to offer vouchers, but at the same time, for every voucher given, he also wanted to kick back money to the public school that lost that student. The money to be used for direct improvements. It was a way, in his eyes at least, to offer more “choice” for parents, but at the same time not punish the public schools. It is a logical solution, but unfortunately, too complicated for most half-assed informed Representatives to understand.

    It was a little too complicated to get passed in the Mo. House and that was why some (most…all) of my colleagues (union teachers/officials) were against his proposed bill/solution. We endorsed someone else. I was too much of a pussy to stick up for the plan but it was something new to me and I had little time to consider it. I think it merits more attention as a possible solution to our school voucher dilemma.

    At any rate, Mr. Gambaro was the first to propose it (that I know of) and I believe it has merit.
