The following statement is from Congressman Lacy Clay, a longtime supporter and co-chair of Barack Obama’s presidential campaign:
“This is a historic night for our country and my party. I am so proud of my friend from Chicago, Barack Obama.
Sixteen months ago, I came out as one of his earliest supporters. And tonight, as one of his campaign co-chairs, I know that this is a transformational moment, not just for the Democratic Party, but for the future of our nation.
Forty three years ago, when Barack was just three years old, Congress passed the voting rights act. And tonight, the promise of America is being fulfilled.
Barack’s candidacy represents the hope of millions of new voters who believe in, and are excited about participating in our democracy.
He also represents the struggle and sacrifice of so many brave people who fought for freedom, equality and full citizenship, and he is the proud son of that legacy.
This election will offer the clearest choice in modern American history.
It will be a choice between hope and the politics of fear.
A choice between continuing the failed policies of the last seven years, or changing the direction of this country.
A choice between bringing our troops home or continuing a endless, needless war that we should have never fought.
Barack Obama is the positive change that America can believe in.
I can’t wait to lead his campaign in Missouri.
Barack will win here, and he will help Democrats win up and down the ballot across this country.
Five months from tomorrow, Barack Obama will carry Missouri, and the American people will embrace him as our next President.”
