Rally against brutality — and for local control
Wednesday is National Day Against Police Brutality. A local rally will be held at 4:00 p.m. at Poelker Park, across from City Hall at Tucker and Market. The “Tow Local Control BACK to St. Louis!” rally will be sponsored by the Coalition Against Police Crime & Repression. Participants are encouraged to wear all black.
Local control of the police department is an issue PubDef.net has covered for years.
In a 2006 interview with PubDef, Alderman Terry Kennedy said without local control the police department is similar to an “occupying force.”
In February, state and city officials came together to support a bill to return control of the police department to the city. The bill passed the committee, but never reached the floor of the House for a vote.
Earlier this year, even Mayor Francis Slay — who has for years opposed local control — came out in favor of the bill — although he has not done much of anything to move the issue forward since then.

Fact Checker, you need a new name. No, Slay has not supported local control before this year — not as mayor, not as President of the Board of Aldermen, and not as 23rd Ward Alderman.
In fact, if you watch the second video above, even the KMOX reporter and some aldermen were surprised to hear he was speaking in favor of it this time.

When did Slay come out against local control? When he was my Alderman he told our meeting he was for local control. That was many years ago. I think you need to double check your source. Blogs are very young and not all quotes are on u tube.

Considering you’re the same person, with the same IP address, that wrote the first comment (and dozens of other pro-Slay comments), then I’d say you either work for Francis, are one of his many contract-receiving cronies, or at the very least are one of his Kool-Aid drinkers.
Grow some balls and quit posting comments under different names.

First, did you not notice I was making fun of the name of the first poster?
Second, I don’t know how my IP address could be the same as someone elses. I don’t know how they work but I thought every computer had a different IP address.
Third, I do not work, I am actually happily retired. I have received no contracts and did not know anyone was giving out any free kool aid.
I spend my time reading blogs like this and find your blind hatred amusing. You and maybe a few other local blogs are huge conspiracy theorists and I get a kick out of reading your ramblings and occassionally throwing a little fuel on your hate filled fires.
I do have balls and thank you for your concern about their growth.

People, Mayor Slay is for local control today in order to take the steam out of a local Recall effort. It was a beautiful flanking move designed with perfection to completely discredit the Recall effort. It makes you wonder who’s side the activist community works for.
