Democrat Nadal supports Republican Gibbons for A.G., slams Chris Koster
State Rep. Maria Chappelle-Nadal (D-University City) is one of the more liberal members of the Missouri Legislature, but that isn’t stopping her from throwing her support behind the Republican candidate for Attorney General — in fact, it may be the reason.
The Democratic candidate for A.G. was, until just this year, a Republican. State Sen. Chris Koster joined the Democratic Party just weeks before announcing his candidacy. His critics charged Koster with opportunism, arguing that he saw the writing on the wall that this was going to be a bad year for Republicans. And at the time, it was also believed that U.S. Attorney Catherine Hanaway, former Republican Speaker of the House, might jump in the race, making her the clear front runner for the GOP nomination.
In the end, Hanaway didn’t run (and neither did Gov. Matt Blunt for re-election) and Koster won the Democratic nomination by just 852 votes, three-tenths of one percent.
Nadal says she doesn’t care what party Koster is claiming nowadays, she’s not supporting him.
In a radio ad running on St. Louis radio and in a letter to supporters, Nadal outlines the reasons she’s supporting Republican Mike Gibbons, and why she is not supporting Chris Koster.
“Of course it is not typical of me to support a Republican, but this year it is a MUST. The Johnny-Come-Lately Democrat (who was a republican until this year) is an abominable candidate and a disgrace to the democratic process Not only has he bought out some prominent leaders for their support, but he has a serious character limitation and a long personal history of disrespecting women (which I will not cover in this email but has been verified). His record is also a disgrace.”
Bullet points from her email:

Maria is dead on for this one. Chris Koster has not yet proven himself as a loyal member of the Democratic party and yet he already wants to be elected to one of the state’s highest offices. He won’t get my vote.
The bullet point listed here I am most interested in is this one: “Currently being INVESTIGATED by the Missouri Ethics Commission for SERIOUS complaints of money laundering that may lead to an indictment in the future.”
Why hasn’t the Missouri Ethics Commission ruled on the lingering complaints reportedly filed in June. They would have had to receive an extension from a judge in order to delay ruling, which means there has got to be something going on here.

This is a controversial decision obviously. There will certainly be people angry at her. But I think most of the insiders will be privately cheering her on.
You have a set of people in the party that just don’t like him. They don’t trust him.
Then you have another set that just do not want to deal with him partially because of the dirst set.
Then you have a group of people that have supported him ll the way. They will be mad as hell.
But again I think those first two groups will be ahppy about this. Although I bet not many people have the guts to say it.

Great job. I had never heard of Maria, the long named person, until today.
Antonio can you tell us a little about her. What her background is. Who supports her.
She did what many of us want to do but don’t have the guts.

Go Maria! You speak for all of us real Democrats, and I can only hope that thousands of us turn out tomorrow to let this guy know he needs to earn his stripes before he can earn our votes. I am a real Democrat and I am voting for Gibbons. NO fake Democrats in our party!

What principle? Maria’s supporting someone who disagrees with her on virtually every issue because she doesn’t like his opponent.
I generally like Maria, but this is weird.

This woman is crazy. She supports Gibbons because he sends his kids to public school??? Because he works in a bipartisan manner?? Gives both parties equal opportunity to pass legislation???? My god, is she serious.
Koster is a strong supporter of stem cell research, he is pro choice and he has always supported workers rights.
While the fringe of the party is doing stupid things like supporting a republican that will take away workers rights and a womans right to choose the base of the party will be supporting Koster.

The principle that the Democrat Party should run actual Democratic candidates.

I am sure it wasn’t an easy decision for her to publicly take that stance. One can only hope that more politicians take her lead and stand up for what they believe is right. Partisan politics continues to destroy our city, state, and nation.
Hats off to you Miss Nadal, keep up the good work!
