Favazza Not a “Fat Bastard”, But Possibly a Mayoral Candidate

Last week, the St. Louis Metro Evening Whirl, that fine urban publication which curiously endorsed my candidacy for Committeeman one week only to slam me the next week and which equally curiously features flattering PR photos of Francis Slay or Matt Blunt (all shot by one Gentry Trotter) on the front page of nearly every issue, surrounded, of course, by mug shots of the last week’s murders, robbers, and other villains plaguing our city — Anyway, last week, the Whirl lambasted a certain citywide elected official for daring to consider running against Hizzoner, Mayor Slay.

Using language typical of the publication, the anonymously written “Shadow” column called Circuit Clerk Mariano Favazza a “fat bastard” and charged that he’d been popping off at the mouth about how he’s thinking about taking a shot at Room 200.

Untrue, Favazza tells PubDef — at least on two out of the three charges.

First, “I can prove my parents were married at the time of my conception,” Favazza told us, laying to rest the “bastard” claim.

Second, as for the “fat” label, anyone who has seen the ten-year Circuit Clerk knows that he looks dramatically different in the last year after losing an astounding 143 pounds! “I am formerly fat,” says Favazza, who now boasts a 36-inch waistline.

But as for that last and most serious charge of possibly taking a run at the city’s highest office, how does the court clerk plead?

“I don’t rule anything out in my life,” says Favazza. “People have asked me to run. To date, no one has showed up with any money.”

Well, don’t expect a check from “The Shadow” or The Evening Whirl.  (It would probably bounce anyway.)

Favazza should be able to run if he wants to run. Some people in this City see democracy as being held in the hands of a few with no ability for open contests. Slay started off with what appeared to be good intentions but has become a bad Mayor over the past several years. The public schools have not improved, we have corruption in the police department, our city is racially divided, we lost ballpark village, we lost Centene, we signed up for the St. Louis Center project and it failed, Chief George was mishandled, the unions have been lied to about the pay plan, we have an administration filled with nepotism, we have higher sales tax, we have higher property tax, we have an unfunded pension system, we have a policy of benign neglect and eventual eminent domain in Paul McKee’s target area and a host of other problems. With all of those issues, Favazza and anybody else who wants to should be able to run for Mayor.

What are Mr. Favazza’a views on the public schools? The indirect Mayoral control with the Schoemehl board just gave the slps even more challenges.

What about Mike McMillan?

What about Darlene Green?

What about Mark Smith? He raised a ton of money when running for Congress.

Irene Smith got a lot of votes with very little money. Why does Mr. Favazza think that he needs a lot of money?

Mr. Slay seems like a well intentioned man that surrounded himself with poor choices [Jim Sonderman is the only one in the Mayor's Office with social skills, the exception that proves the rule.] The Post has treated Mr. Slay differently than it treated Mr. Bosley.

at least they didn’t put you in the “wife beaters and sweetheart mistreaters” section

Trotter is the lowest of the low.

Curiously would he slit the white conservative vote thus making a progressive African American candidate our next mayor?

I do not know Mariano Favazza’s opinion on the public schools, but I live in the district where his son unsuccessfully tried to unseat Michelle Kratky for a house seat, and on every piece of literature I received from the younger Favazza he slammed public schools and supported vouchers and tax breaks for those attending private schools.

ha ha ha ha

you make me laugh doug!! i wish you were a political consultant because your record would be about as good as frenchs!!!

do you have any idea what callow and rainford are going to do to favazza or mcmillan if they run against slay?

i almost feel sorry for those guys b/c EVERYTHING buried away deep in their closets will be exposed……EVERYTHING!!

Favazza did a great public service when he put the Circuit Court records online. I have no idea where he stands on a lot of issues, but I know he has been a great Circuit Clerk.

Slay has also done some good things for St. Louis city. As far as Green, she has the money to take on the office but she doesn’t have the ability to convey her message affluently.

McMillan has the ability to take on Slay and take on the office but he doesn’t have the money for such a campaign. He would also have to face issues that may arise about his past and present (city hall rumblings) fondness for those of the same sex.

Speaking of same sex rumors, didn’t Francis Slay move out of the house with his wife and move in with a male friend in deep south St. Louis?

And who the hell is Richard Callow to be calling someone gay?! Ha!

A viable candidate against Slay has thousands of voters just waiting to vote for someone besides Slay, so Slay’s money shouldn’t deter anyone who thinks they are a good candidate and have a good vision for the city. Bringing up money is just the political in-crowd’s way of trying to dissuade pesky “outsiders” from daring to think they could run.

And since when does being gay keep someone from being a decent mayor? That shouldn’t be an issue at all, and isn’t for most voters.

Really! Does the city truly care if their Mayor or would be Mayor is gay?

I’d say not.

Davis, nice one, but there is no truth to the rumor of Slay moving out. As for McMillan, who cares? Peter Kinder has never married, and he gets lots of support from gay-hating Republicans who don’t even suggest he might be you-know-what.

Ha ha I better get ready to sell my house before McMillan and his harem of young pretty boys take over. I know why Darlene doesn’t want the job…she’d have to show up for work more than two days a week.

So when Mike gets charged for his personal use of campaign funds will he step down from office?

Why can’t we elect Lewis after Fran finishes his third term. That makes the most sense to me.

Mariano? Seriously? I just vomited in my mouth a little thinking of that moron in room 200. I would sooner elect my senile mother than this guy! Maybe he’ll recommend his doctor on official letterhead again…that was brilliant!

I will support Favazza or McMillan as long as the city benefits from Slay’s departure. For the record, McMillan has a girlfriend. He just keeps her away from all of the mean-spirited folk int his city. They are both pleasing to be around and are quite lovely.

Mariano has no business getting his nose in the race for mayor. For anyone who hasn’t seen the article in the Evening Whirl, the author pointed out how clueless he is when it comes to running his current office. Also stated in the article was how whenever he does something, it is all about Mariano and no one else.

As an ex employee, I can tell you first hand just how incompetent the man is. First off, the turnover rate in the office is ridiculous because he doesn’t know how to take care of his employees. Employee appreciation day consisted of a hot dog and stale chips lunch that he probably didn’t have to shell out a single dime to purchase. On Christmas, he would come around and give out little bags full of candy. Not my idea of appreciation. Unless there was a huge problem, (which often there was) you would never see him. Now I know it’s not the greatest paying job, but a little more interaction with his clerks could have gone a long way in keeping more people. It is so difficult to get work done when you are constantly training new folks.

Another reason why the office is so poor is because certain departments don’t know what the other departments are doing. Sort of the left hand doesn’t know what the right hand is doing. If your work is going to directly affect another department’s job, shouldn’t you know what they are doing and how their job works? Far to many times, I would receive work and actually do more work than necessary, because someone didn’t know what my job was and how I handled the case… But he wouldn’t know either because he never worked in any of the departments or any of the courtrooms.

I could give you so many more examples, but let’s move on. Enjoy this story…

One day, Tony Favazza (As stated in the Whirl) called me in his office to ask if I wanted to take a better job. I could barely finish my sentence before he asked how he looked after he lost all that weight. I was in complete shock. It wasn’t “You do a great job, congratulations,” it was HOW DO I LOOK? Can you believe that?? It’s not about his employees, its all about HIM and it has always been that way.

When he put his name in to fill the vacancy of the Honorable Joan Burger, I couldn’t tell you how many Judges (31 to be exact) wanted him to get that spot because they wouldn’t have had to deal with him as much as they do now. Even the Judges who he thinks he is friends with don’t like him. Not to mention attorneys, the Sheriff’s Department, the Circuit Attorney’s Office who can’t stand him and just wish he would roll over and die.

Now I don’t really have a problem with Mariano except for the fact he doesn’t know how to run the zoo for an office that he has. However, if he decides to run for mayor, (which I’m pretty sure he is) I will do everything it takes to see that he gets worse results than when he embarrassed himself and ran for Congress.

People, do the right thing and make sure this clown doesn’t get anywhere near City Hall. He is already close enough where he is right now at 10 N Tucker.

The last post must have come from the Mayor’s office. Darlene Green shows up for more than 2 days of work a week. I see her in the community frequently. I own a business in the City and have been to McMillan’s office. An older, middle aged woman waited on me and was very professional. There were two other women at the counter and all other women behind her so I don’t know where the harem of young boys are. Lewis seems to do well as President of the Board of Aldermen but I heard he has no interest in being Mayor. Mariano would be no worse than Slay. I’d rather have a mistaken letter than his brother at the airport, sister having worked for Callow and been a part of the management team of the police department where a scandal has been brewing for years.

Question for truth–

Do you know what happened to the people who left Favazza’s office?

Some people complain of the low pay of government jobs, but the turnover rate, generally speaking, is not that of the private sector. Most people say benefits, holidays etc., and job stability keep people in government jobs. I would be curious to know where the former workers landed.

The filter thinks this is spiced ham.

This is quite an interesting thread!

B right,
Are you sure that was his girlfriend? Did he say so? Who is she? Details?

Jack-get a life! It is tiresome to read one’s hatred.

A mutual friend said that he introduced a woman as his girlfriend during a recent lunch at Shannon’s. The report is she is a long-time friend who is a civic activist and works with Better Family Life. They were supposively very happy to be together. Good for him, and her.

The last post was one of the most ignorant ones that I have seen from the Mayor’s office. They should be doing the work of the City that they are paid to do by the taxpayers as opposed to working illegally on campaigns during work hours. Rainford personally directs the Mayor’s re-election efforts while at City Hall getting over $125,000.00 from the people. As opposed to talking about the issues facing our City, they would rather change the subject to a supposed drag queen and whether or not someone is gay, bisexual or straight. I personally don’t give a damn about what a person does in their personal life and most people in the City don’t either. I want to know what you are doing to make this City a better place to live, work, play and raise a family. I wonder if the Mayor’s three gay siblings would appreciate him ordering/condoning attacking people’s character about what they may or may not do in bed? I wonder how the City’s large gay and lesbian community would feel about that? I wonder how Mike Colona and Jeanette Mott Oxford would feel about that since they were both elected and are openly gay and Slay backed Colona’s opponent? The real issues that we need to stick to in discussing the future of our City are:
1. What are we going to do about the public schools? Slay’s answers have failed us.
2. What are we going to do about the budget? Slay has layed off hundreds of employees since becoming Mayor and barely balanced a budget.
3. What are we going to do about the racial problems in our City? Slay has made things worse than ever.
4. What are we going to do about our pension systems? Slay has gotten more taxes paid but lied about what we did with the proceeds.
5. Our property taxes have gone through the roof for a school system that has gotten worse under Slay.
6. The faith we have in our police department has diminshed considerably. We have had several scandals ranging from the missing money, world series tickets, and towing scandal where people have legitimate legal claims against the City and Police Department for stealing their cars. Slay was a mmember of the Board of Police Commissioners while this whole scandal took place.
7. The racial divide in the Fire Department is equivalent to 30 years ago based on Slay’s mismanagement of the Chief George incident.
8. The Mayor claims that he cannot control his Personnel Director but he appointed him which means he is either lying or makes significantly bad judgments.
9. The administration has a horrible record of diversity in its executive staff. Ron Smith is the only minority in the Mayor’s Office who has an executive position. Mayors 40 years ago had better track records of inclusion than that.
10. Ballpark Village is a disaster. There have been three press conferences but no action. St. Louis will be embarrassed in front of the world during the All Star Game next year.
11. After the AB takeover, we will not have one fortune 500 company located in the City. May Company is gone. Federated moved out aftewards. Thompson Coburn will likely follow Armstrong Teasdale out of the City making Clayton the legal headquarters of the region. Ralston Purina was sold and there seems to be no plan whatsoever to attract another major company here.
12. The City signed off on the St. Louis Center project as an extension of its line of credit and it has failed miserably and it is currently embroiled in bankruptcy.
13. City Hall should be a crown jewel of the region yet it is ugly, dirty, has bad maintenance and does not even have new paint on its cracked walls.
14. Our homicide rate is going through the roof yet we have the Chief of Staff of the Mayor illegally running campaigns and engaged in pure ignorance (which is what he is best known for going back to his attempted set up of a Catholic priest) as opposed to doing anything about it.
15. There is not one new idea or program coming out of Room 200. There is no new vision of how to deal with the previously mentioned questions and there never will be under this administration.

Those are the things that we should be focused on in St. Louis. All other issues are a waste of time and an effort to change the discussion to stupidity versus legitimacy.

Truth, you claim to have intimate knowledge as an ex employee. Let me ask you a question. Has Favazza ever once required you to go to one of his fundraisers and then require you to contribute, like so many other politicians in this city? No, he hasn’t. How many city employees actually get a present at Christmas from their boss? None that I know of, and those that do are paying for it out of their own contribution to their boss’ campaign. Do any of the other city politicians have an employee appreciation day for their employees? I don’t believe so. Favazza pays for all of these things out of his own pocket because the man couldn’t fundraise if his life depended on it, which is probably the sole reason he won’t run for mayor. So take your hateful attitude somewhere people might enjoy it, like over to city hall with Slay and Gentry Trotter. And while over there, say congrats to Michele Kratky, the Slay backed candidate, who had more money than she knew what to do with and all of the organizational support, for barely beating a 24 year old kid who was still in school and never held a real full time job in his life. And if Favazza wants to run for mayor, let him and anyone else who wants to run. Anybody will do a better job than Slay.

Favazza is a buffoon!!

Months later, and Trotter is still at his shit. What a pimple on the city’s face!
