VIDEO: World Saxophone Quartet

Posted on 06 October 2006 by Antonio French

Let’s start Friday off right — with some tunes.

Yesterday we took our camera over to the East Side, near Brooklyn, Illinois. No, it’s not what you’re thinking. It was for a project. No, not that kind of project… Look, can we just get back to the story?

Anyway, not far past all the strip clubs and prostitutes, in a town called Lovejoy (oh boy), is a school appropriately named Lovejoy School. Six decades ago, a boy named Hamiet Bluiett attended that school. That boy grew up to become one of the most respected saxophonists on the planet. Yesterday, he returned to Lovejoy and he brought along three of his friends. Together, they call themselves the World Saxophone Quartet.

The World Saxophone Quartet — comprised of founding members Bluiett and Oliver Lake, and master saxophonists James Carter and St. Louis native Greg Osby — are currently celebrating their 30th Anniversary. They will be performing tonight and Saturday at the Bistro, 3536 Washington Ave., across from the Fox Theatre.

PHOTOS: CBC Awards Dinner

Posted on 10 September 2006 by Antonio French

The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s 36th Annual Legislative Conference ended last night with their annual Awards Dinner. More than 400 tables — at up to $750 per seat — filled the Washington Convention Center as members of the CBC honored and were honored by current and former members.

It seemed that every black player in national politics was in the room last night. But no one drew the crowds — or the opportunistic photo seekers (this reporter included) — like U.S. Senator Barack Obama.

PUB DEF bumped into St. Louis State Rep. Rodney Hubbard among the thousands of people at the dinner and we followed him as he worked the room. See some of our photos from the night at www.pubdef.net/photos/cbc_weekend/9-9-2006.html

McCaskill on Hardball

Posted on 06 September 2006 by Antonio French

U.S. Senate candidate Claire McCaskill sent out a media advisory moments ago saying their candidate will be on MSNBC’s “Hardball with Chris Matthews” at 6:00 this evening. From the advisory:

Today, during MSNBC’s day-long programming dedicated to politics in America, U.S. Senate Claire McCaskill will be interviewed by Chris Matthews on Hardball. The show will profile the McCaskill-Talent race. Even after $2.5 million in G.O.P. television ads, Sunday’s St. Louis Post Dispatch/Research 2000 Poll shows McCaskill leading Talent 47-46.

Talent, McCaskill Agree to 3rd Debate

Posted on 24 August 2006 by Antonio French

Sen. Jim Talent and challenger Claire McCaskill today accepted an offer by KYTV, Ozarks Public Television, KSMU and the Springfield News-Leader to debate during prime time on Monday, October 16.

The Springfield debate will be moderated by KY3 News Anchor Jerry Jacob and the panel will include KY3 Political Reporter Dave Catanese, Springfield News-Leader Editorial Board Editor Tony Messenger (what a great name for a reporter) and KSMU Senior Governmental Affairs Reporter Missy Shelton.

The candidates will also meet in Lake Ozark on September 15, at the Missouri Press Association’s Candidate’s Forum, and in Washington, D.C. on October 8, for a debate on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

We’re told that both campaigns are continuing to work together to schedule additional debates in other regions of the state — St. Louis, anyone?
